Report Card: Margaritas Mexican Restaurant

The Breakdown:

Atmosphere:  Grade B-:  Honestly, Margaritas Mexican Restaurant in Myrtle Beach, SC is nothing to look at.  When we pulled into the parking lot, I couldn’t help to think that maybe Katina is slipping a little as she ages, because it did not look like it was going to be a good experience.  Boy, was I wrong.  The exterior of the building was nothing fancy, and on the inside, the restaurant was decked out in traditional, low end Mexican décor.  If you are fool enough to pass on eating in a place just because of its appearance, then you’re wasting your time reading this blog.  Margaritas is exactly why Katina and I wanted to do this blog.  I would have normally driven right by the place based on looks alone, and I would have missed out.  Aside from the cheesy décor, the place was clean and the tables were nicely spaced.

High marks:  Clean, tables nicely spaced

Low marks:   Plain exterior and cheesy interior décor

Service:  Grade B+:  We had a delightful young man named Chuy for our server.  Granted, we only understood every third word or so as Chuy’s accent was rather thick, but that didn’t matter.  Chuy understood us, and if we asked for it, we got it.  As with most authentic Mexican restaurants, our food arrived just minutes after we ordered it.  If the food didn’t taste so good, I’d swear it was microwaved it came out so fast.  Our drinks stayed full, and a fresh boat of chips and cup of salsa were delivered before we even realized we needed them.  Very solid performance from Chuy and the rest of the Margaritas staff.

High marks:   Good service, minimal wait

Low marks:   Server difficult to understand

Food/Spirits:  Grade A:   Here is where Margaritas Mexican Restaurant shines.  We were very pleasantly surprised with the quality of our food.  Normally, Katina and I would drink tea or lemonade since we had the kids with us, but on this occasion we had to give in to temptation.  Let us give you a little background and you’ll understand.  We used to have this little Mexican restaurant within walking distance from our house.  They had really decent food, but what initially hooked Katina and myself was their Banana Margarita.  It was our first, and as you’d expect, we wanted more.  Subsequent visits to this restaurant yielded no banana margaritas – they were usually out of the ingredients.  Shortly after they opened their doors, the went out of business, and we have been trolling the Mexican restaurants wherever we go looking for a good banana margarita.

We finally found it.  The bad thing is that we’re not driving back down to Myrtle Beach to get another one.  The banana margaritas were exquisite.  We both made our “O” faces after the first sip.  As for food, Katina got chicken chimichangas and I ordered something called the “monster burrito.”  Katina thought her chimichangas were very well seasoned and really enjoyed the ranchero sauce that came with them.  Overall, she thought they were really good.  The monster burrito looked just like you’d expect it to…it was huge.  The burrito itself was really tasty, but there was a little too much lettuce in the burrito, which unbalanced it.  Overall though, I’d order it again (just sans lettuce next time).

High marks:  Banana margaritas, good chimichangas

Low marks:  Too much lettuce in burrito

Value:  Grade A+:  Margaritas was our second lowest bill during our vacation.  The big difference between it and the lowest bill (River City Café) was food quality.  Margaritas gets the “A+” because the food was really inexpensive AND delicious.  That’s how you do it.  We highly recommend you give Margarita’s a try if you get the chance.

High marks:   Inexpensive and great food

Low marks:   None
